Statement

Hi, I’m Barb, born and raised in Guatemala. Currently, I’m in my second year as a postdoc at the University of Cincinnati, collaborating with NOvA, DUNE, and the EMPHATIC experiments. I have been based at Fermi for six years (Cheers!). I first came to Fermilab as a Ph.D. student from UTFSM in Chile to develop my thesis research with the MINERvA experiment.

For the past ten years, I have studied in Italy, Chile, and the USA; this, together with my experience of growing up and doing my bachelor’s in my home country, has helped me to look into the differences and similarities beyond research and academics but between different cultures and people’s circumstances.

Fermilab has a diverse and vibrant population invested in forward-thinking research driven by the desire to innovate and make an impact. At Fermilab, I have been able to appreciate how different organizations such as UEC, FSPA (I was a member back in 2018), and other committees had the potential to be effective channels for creating new networks of advocacy and proficiency, fostering research collaboration and support across the different divisions within the lab but also, through cooperation with other external institutions and programs.

As a UEC member, you can account that I will be willing to hear and take action about anything valuable in our Fermi-community but also any concern about your present and future steps as a researcher, keeping in mind that our career decisions play along with our life stages and needs. I am interested in working to improve the current efforts to increase the participation and leadership roles of under-represented groups in the lab, quality of life, outreach programs, community engagement activities, and, as I did back in 2018 as an FSPA member, lobbying the US Congress for funding HEP programs.

I would bring my experience as an international Fermi user, a former FSPA member, a resident of the Fermi Village, and now as a young researcher to come together and get a better experience for all.

It will be an honor to represent you in the UEC.

Thank you.
