Statement

I have been a part of the Fermilab user community since 1989, working in the summers on fixed target experiments as an undergraduate student. I joined the CDF experiment in 1997 as a postdoc and was a Wilson Fellow at Fermilab from 2002 until 2007. I have been on the faculty at Iowa since 2007, and as a member of the CMS collaboration I have benefited from the LHC Physics Center (LPC) at Fermilab. Many graduate students and postdocs from Iowa have been in residence at the LPC, enabling our group to fully collaborate in CMS research. Currently our Iowa group has three graduate students working on CMS, with two working at the LPC. Iowa recently joined the DUNE collaboration, and we continue to collaborate with Fermilab scientists and engineers on R&D for DUNE Near and Far Detectors.

I have been on the US LHC Users Association Executive Committee (USLUEC) for several years, and will be transitioning off of that committee at the end of this year. A highlight of my USLUEC experience has been the yearly trips to Washington DC to meet with congressional staff to promote the HEP community. These are joint trips with the Fermilab UEC and the SLAC Users Organization. I feel that this type of outreach is incredibly important to our field as we must continuously pass our message to Congress to retain support. I would look forward to the opportunity to participate in this effort as a member of UEC.

A main focus of my work at the University of Iowa is promoting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. I lead our department’s DEI Committee and am on university and college-level committees to address these important issues. I am currently serving on the CMS Implementation Team for Diversity and Inclusion. I would plan to become involved in DEI efforts through the UEC, should I be elected.

As a professor at the University of Iowa, member of the CMS and DUNE collaborations and a long-time member of the Fermilab user community, I feel that my experience would be useful to the UEC. I am honored by the nomination and look forward to the opportunity to serve.
