UEC Nominee for 2023-2025 Term: Yongyi Wu

Yongyi Wu
Argonne National Lab

Statement

I am in my second year as a Postdoctoral Appointee at Argonne National Laboratory. As an HEP experimentalist, my primary research interests are in the intensity frontier. I am currently working on the Muon g-2 and Mu2e experiments.

It was an honor to be nominated to run for the 2023-2025 Fermilab Users Executive Committee. I see this as a great opportunity to support the joint success of Fermilab and our fellow users, to advance the scientific endeavor, and to build a more open and welcoming community. I first visited Fermilab as an undergraduate summer student in 2014, and I was immediately enchanted by the uniquely immersive experience of an open national laboratory. Collaborating with experts from all around the world, enjoying the diverse cultures and perspectives their backgrounds bring, and engaging in the rich outreach programs with the local community, I found Fermilab a wonderful place to do physics research. Just like many of us, some of the changes since the pandemic were difficult for me, and I want to make things better.

Should I be elected, I wish to focus on two major areas. The first area being advocating more and extending more support for the early career colleagues, people from minority backgrounds, and the international community among the users, who have been heavily impacted by the circumstances in the past few years. I would like to strength UEC’s support to our fellow users, such as creating additional counseling venues and mentoring programs, so that any voices or concerns can be more efficiently communicated and addressed. I believe our scientific enterprise will thrive from a better supported user group. I would also like to boost the public engagement at the lab, to seek bringing more arts, cultural and community outreach programs back. For years, we showed the outside community the great beauty of the science we do and benefited greatly from their support. Without doubt, we ought to cultivate this great relationship, and I see this as something UEC can engage more on.

I have in the past served in the Young Mu2e Committee, an organization for early career personnels in the Mu2e experiment, as its international representative and the vice president, addressing members’ concerns and needs. I also organized outreach events such as lab visits. I possess the abilities to meet new challenges as a UEC member. I would sincerely appreciate it if you would choose me to represent and act for you in the next two years.
